HOW TO FURNISH A NEW SPACE

August 30, 2018

A comprehensive guide on how to furnish your home, room by room, design made simple.

Having an empty space to furnish and decorate can be a stressful, daunting experience. Not everyone is an interior decorator, but the good thing is a lot of us know what kinds of styles we like and don’t like.

At this point, you’ve likely found yourself in an empty room in your new place and your first thought has been, where in the world do I start?  Where should we put the sofa? Should we even have a sofa? What about a sectional? A sofa-bed, perhaps?

This is where we come in. Here at MOE’s, we believe that designing a space is not meant to be a stressful experience, but a fun one and a chance for you to showcase your great style and personality. In this series, we’re going to talk about how you can approach a new space and a lightly used space that both need some TLC.

For today’s post, we are going to talk about how to approach an empty space through looking at a living room.

Let’s get one thing clear, you aren’t going to be able to figure out everything you want in one easy step. Not everyone turns into an interior decorator as soon as they see an empty space, so don’t be hard on yourself if you’re taking a while to figure things out. In fact, picking pieces over time is a great way to preserve your space and ensure that you are going to enjoy every aspect of your house for years to come.

Chances are, you have probably seen the space before, and now have a type of style in mind that you’d like to use. Some popular styles are: industrial, modern, transitional, mid-century, traditional, and rustic. Most of the time, you will run into pieces that are a hybrid of these. For example, mid-century modern furniture has seen an increase in popularity in the last couple of years. With all of this in mind, let’s look at how to outfit your space.

Step 1: STAND THERE

At this stage of the planning process, you are going to want to see if your living room is a closed off or open-concept space. If you have a separated living room space, you can keep your design ideas separate from other places like your bedroom, den, kitchen, and office. However, if you have an open concept space, having items and color palates that match are great ways to ensure continuity in your space.

Also, try to imagine yourself in the space. If you have great views, you may want your seating to focus on those views. If you have a TV you are going to mount on the wall, make that decision around this time as well.

Step 2: LIGHTING

Now, let’s take a look at sun exposure. Note where the light comes into the room at different times during the day. If you want to paint the room a different color, you should put swatches on each wall to see the change in the color variation throughout the day as well.

Based on where the light hits, you can also determine where you might want to place some of your furniture and what kind of window shades you may need. This is important, especially if you don’t have blinds or shades for two reasons: 1) you never want to place your furniture in any direct sunlight as the sunlight will naturally bleach fabrics. 2) Rugs, rugs, rugs. Rugs are instrumental when it comes to transforming a space, but they are easily bleached by the sun if left in direct contact with it all day.

Step 2: PAINTERS TAPE

One of the greatest mistakes we can make when buying furniture is falling in love with something and trying to ‘make it work’. You want to buy furniture to fit your space, not the other way around. Therefore, a design and planning hack that we’ve come across is painters’ tape. Painters tape isn’t harsh on flooring and will peel off easily without leaving any residue on your walls or floors. Measure out the area where you’d potentially like to put your: sofa, sectional, ottoman, chaise, media console, sideboard, side table, and accent table. Once you have done this, you will have an idea of what’s going to be where and whether or not you like the configuration of the space. If you don’t, lift the tape up and move it into an alternative position. Keep re-arranging the tape until you are happy with the placement. Remember that you can also change the configuration of the furniture once it is in the apartment, your main concern at this point is to make sure that it fits.

Tips and tricks for arrangement:

Take the size of seating you want into consideration. Ask yourself, how can I make the most of my space?

This may seem like another daunting question, but this is why you have the painters’ tape- you can envision how it will fit in your space before you purchase it! By placing the tape in the configuration of a sectional in a size that you are happy with, you can take the measurements with you when you visit your closest MOE’s store where our team can help you find the best item for you and your space. We also include all of the product dimension information on our website!

STEP 3: BUYING

We suggest buying the largest items first. These items will likely be your sofa or sectional, coffee table, sideboard, and media console. From there, you can build up your living room by purchasing side and accent tables, lighting, rugs, and décor.

In our next post we are going to visit the topic of how we can add some definition to spaces that need a little bit of TLC and spaces where you are starting off with a few products.
