Moe’s supports Family Services of Greater Vancouver

On January 23 & 24, 2010 a portion of all Vancouver sales at Moe’s will be donated to Family Services of Greater Vancouver.   Also earlier in January 2010, Moe's Home Collection donated new furniture pieces to the Family Services of Greater Vancouver's program space in their New Westminster office. This space serves families and children in need and includes Community Education, Counseling, Victim Support Services, Project Parenting, and Parenting Mediation programs. We hope this makeover has helped make the space even more inviting and will make families and children feel comfortable and welcome in this space for years to come.

About Family Services of Greater Vancouver

Family Services of Greater Vancouver is committed to strengthening individuals, families and communities by delivering a diverse range of professional and support services to those experiencing challenges in their lives. We believe that every child should have the chance to be nurtured & to thrive, every youth should have the opportunity to reach their potential, and everyone should have the capacity to meet life’s challenges.

Between 2000 and 2006, 101 Canadian soldiers and police officers lost their lives in the line of duty; during this same time frame, over 500 Canadian women were shot, stabbed, strangled or beaten to death due to intimate partner violence (Brian Vallee:  “The War on Women”).  The Burnaby/New Westminster Victim Support Program of Family Services of Greater Vancouver serves people who experience violence in their families, most of whom are women and their children.  We offer safety planning, information and emotional support.  Because of financial barriers, women often have to choose between safety and other basic needs, such as adequate housing.  The most significant barriers to safety for the people we serve are the financial ones (e.g. affordable housing, food, transportation, school costs) and the ways these financial barriers affect their children. With your help, we will be able to help women address these barriers by providing tangible support such as bus tickets and emergency food vouchers. We will also be able to help women deal with the financial impact on their children by paying for such items as  registration fees in sports and arts activities, school supplies, and clothing.
